I first discovered Courtney Barnett eleven years ago when she covered a song from The Lemonheads. Because of that, I have a certain adoration for when she covers a song, and her latest does not disappoint. She takes on Neil Young's iconic 1978 song "Lotta Love." The cover is quite faithful to the original, partially because she adds a bit of 70's AM radio/Laurel Canyon vibe to the song that's absent from Young's original, but fits in perfectly. The best covers tend to remain faithful to the original while the cover-er adds some of their own elements to their version, and that's exactly what Barnett does here.
Courtney Barnett says of her latest cover:
"’Lotta Love’ is one of my favourite Neil songs and the lyrics feel especially relevant at this moment in history. It’s a real honour to be part of this tribute helping to raise funds for The Bridge School."
You can listen to Courtney Barnett's version of "Lotta Love" below. Heart of Gold: The Songs of Neil Young Volume I is due out April 25 on Cinema Music Group and Killphonic Records. Proceeds of the album will benefit The Bridge School in Hillsborough, CA. You can pre-order your copy here. For more on Courtney Barnett, check out the artist's website.
