It's fairly hard to tie down the latest single from The Ophelias. The Julien Baker produced "Cumulonimbus" has its roots in 90's alt-rock, but it's hardly a throwback song. The band have also filled the track with plenty of modern alt-pop, creating an interesting dichotomy. As much as 90's alt-rock could have pop hooks, it rarely delved this far into pop music. The song also has a very cinematic or orchestral feel to it. "Cumulonimbus" is crafted from multiple different sounds and genres, but The Ophelias mash it all together so that it all flows together perfectly. This is a giant alt-rock track that still keeps everything sounding intimate and personal.
