Phoebe Rings started out as the solo project of New Zealand jazz-school-trained pianist and songwriter Crystal Choi. They released an EP back in October that had a dream pop sound that I described as Belly meets Stereolab. Now they're back with the first single off their upcoming debut album. "Aseurai" still has some qualities of dream pop but is leaning more into the Stereolab side of things. The song is this impossibly groovy track that reminds me of the groovy 60's revival of the mid 90's. Plus, "Aseaurai" has more than a little disco in it. Phoebe Rings have created this beautiful and cool sound for this single that will quickly become a must listen.
Crystal Choi says of her band's latest single:
"Aseurai means around you in the atmosphere, hard to reach, fading away. It’s a poetic expression. You wouldn’t say it in normal conversation, but I like that.”
You can watch the video for "Aseurai" below. Aseurai, the album, is due out June 6 on Carpark Records, and is available for pre-order here. For more on Phoebe Rings, check out the artist's website. Upcoming tour dates are below the video.
