Weakened Friends Cover Natalie Imbruglia

If you've been lucky enough to have seen Weakened Friends over the past year, you've probably seen their cover of mom rock classic "Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia (which is a cover of Ednaswap's original). I assumed this would just be a fun cover exclusive to their live shows, but the Maine trio have released a studio version as a single. When I saw them at Something in the Way earlier this year, singer/guitarist Sonia Sturino asked the crowd to go hard for this song, and the band is doing the same with the cover. Any alt-rock/indie/punk cover of a well known Adult Contemporary song can be interpreted as ironic, but this is a shockingly faithful rendition of the original... just louder and heavier. Sturino treats this song like any of her highly emotional originals, which helps make this one of my favorite songs released this year. This is such a fun cover, and I'm thrilled we have a version of this song as an official release.

You can watch the video for Weakened Friends cover of "Torn" below. The single is out now on Don Giovanni Records, and can be found over at Bandcamp. For more on Weakened Friends, check out the band's website.
