Album: If You Asked for a Picture
Quick Thoughts: I still think of "Kiss City," from Blondshell's debut album, as a super recent song, so I was pleasantly surprised to see the follow-up out so quickly, and further impressed at how great it is. The songs here are super tight, super honest, and super catchy all at once, and it scratches so many of those itches and does what it does so well that it became a must-listen this week. While "23's a Baby" will give shades of Phoebe Bridgers, it's songs like "Change" and "He Wants Me" that allows the band to stand up on its own. A great listen this week.
Songs of Note: "T&A," "23's a Baby," "Change," "He Wants Me"
Artist: Kassi Valazza
Album: From Newman Street
Quick Thoughts: Kassi Valazza has shown a remarkable consistency in her roots-tinged folk efforts, and From Newman Street might be her best yet. Her voice is strong and pure, there's some great songwriting and lyricism, and "Weight of the Wheel" is one of the better songs released this year period. Make time.
Songs of Note: "Birds Fly," "Shadow of Lately," "Small Things," "Market Street Savior," "Weight of the Wheel"
Artist: Samantha Crain
Album: Gumshoe
Quick Thoughts: It's honestly crazy to me that Samantha Crain has been at this for close to 20 years now and is still making essential, underrated and understated music. This latest effort feels like it's right in her wheelhouse, and songs like "Boilermaker" and "Dart" are great reminders of why she deserves to be in more conversations about great singer-songwriters right now. Definitely worth a spot in your rotation.
Songs of Note: "Ridin' Out the Storm," "Boilermaker," "Old Hallicrafter Radio," "Dart"
Artist: Jolie Laide
Album: Creatures
Quick Thoughts: I wanted to make sure this one didn't get lost in the shuffle, as Jolie Laide's approach to alt/indie rock is one that borrows from so many interesting places - "Cheyenne" is about as straightforward as it gets, while "Murder Ballad" could just as well be pulled from the Nick Cave songbook. It's a great listen, so check it out.
Songs of Note: "Cheyenne," "Murder Ballad," "Something for the Thrill," "Old Collapser"
