First Listen: New Releases for 2 August 2024

Artist: Jack White
Album: No Name
Quick Thoughts: While there's an inherent level of "why do people grow as artists" quality to a lot of longtime acts, the last decade or so of Jack White solo work has left me a little more confounded than celebratory. Especially 2022's Fear of the Dawn/Entering Heaven Alive duo, neither of which worked for me at all and just made me wonder where the rocking chaos demon of the White Stripes went. Turns out he was just hibernating, because No Name is by and large a return to the form we thought we might see regularly from his initial solo records. It's a lot of bluesy garage rock with familiar overtones while still retaining that Jack White flair, and I really enjoyed this one. A welcome listen from an old favorite.
Songs of Note: "Old Scratch Blues," "Bless Yourself," "Archbishop Harold Holmes," "What's the Rumpus," "Terminal Archenemy Endling"

Artist: Teenage Tom Petties
Album: Teenage Tom Petties
Quick Thoughts: A good ol' power pop/alt-punk record from one of the best band names going right now. It's impossible to not be charmed by this record, as far as I'm concerned - "Kissed Me In Seattle" and "This Autumn Body" are clear highlights but the whole thing is an enjoyable musical romp. Check it out.
Songs of Note: "Hawaiian Air," "Kissed Me in Seattle," "This Autumn Body," "Handstands for Your Love," "My Mistake"

Artist: Bridgette Calls Me Baby
Album: The Future Is Our Way Out
Quick Thoughts: Bridgette Calls Me Baby makes no effort to pretend they don't sound a lot like the Smiths. It's impossible to acknowledge this album without acknowledging the Morrissey-adjacent vocals and 80s-reverb-heavy instrumentation, With that said, while plenty of bands have tried to ape the Smiths to various degrees of success, this is the first one I've heard in some time that comes really close. The left-of-center lyricism isn't there, but the feel and structure absolutely is, and it turns out that it's one of the better listens of the summer. Worth a listen for sure.
Songs of Note: "The Future Is Our Way Out," "Fine Dining," "We Were Never Alive," "You Are Only Made of Dreams," "Impressively Average"
