Violets - "Eras"

Violets are a Chicago punk supergroup made up of members of Naked Raygun, The Methadones, and Blood People. Their latest single, "Eras," is punk without sounding much like classic punk. In fact, "Eras" doesn't really sound much like other punk bands. It certainly doesn't sound like the bands' members' previous bands. It's noisy without being noise punk, and it's definitely not that new brand of punk that's dance-friendly. If I'm forcing myself to make a comparison, it sounds like if Sonic Youth decided to try to fit in with the 90's Warped Tour crowd. The song is intense and heavy, but also surprisingly catchy and bordering right on mainstream punk.

Guitarist Bill Stephens says of his new band's origins:

“It had become apparent that Naked Raygun wouldn’t be playing anymore, so a new band seemed like an interesting idea. Raygun had done quite a few shows with The Methadones so we were tight with those guys and of course loved the band. And I knew Fritz would be up for it as he was in a similar predicament with Raygun like myself.”

You can listen to "Eras" below. Violets' self-titled EP is due out May 2, and is available to pre-order on Bandcamp. For more on Violets, check out the band on Instagram and Facebook.
