Live Shows: The Sheila Divine, Baabes, and Teardrops, The Sinclair, 1/4/25

I've been a fan of The Sheila Divine for nearly thirty years now. Back in the Fall, Aaron Perrino announced that from then on all of his musical projects would now be under the Sheila Divine umbrella. That means that The Sheila Divine now includes songs from Dear Leader, Aaron & The Lord, etc. Once last Saturday's show at The Sinclair was announced, I obviously had to make it so see what the newfangled Sheila Divine would be.

Taking the stage with six members (and four guitars), The Sheila Divine crushed their set. It was a perfect mixture of a band with something and nothing to prove. Opening with the gloriously moody "The Modern Log" off of 1999's classic New Parade, the band set the mood for the evening. It was a masterclass of a setlist, with the bigger hits from New Parade ("Like a Criminal," "Hum," and "Automatic Buffalo") interspersed throughout the set, with new songs like "Lilydale" and a surprising number of Dear Leader songs ("Radar" and "Raging Red" being highlights) also included. The band also made perfect use of a screen behind them, with videos unique to each song projected. The Dear Leader songs seemed especially reenergized, as who knows how long it's been since these ones have been dusted off for a live performance.

I've seen The Sheila Divine well over ten times at this point, and I can say without hyperbole that Saturday night's show at The Sinclair was my favorite set of theirs since they won the Rock and Roll Rumble back in 1999. Sometimes an artist just needs to shake themselves up, and that has definitely worked for Aaron Perrino.

Baabes took the middle slot of the show, and they're a band I've been trying to see for a while now. After finally seeing them, I have no idea how they aren't one of the most beloved bands in Boston. Their brand of dirty but slick punk was perfect for a live show. Singer Johnny Brains was like an Allston punk version of Bono, and is one of the most compelling frontpeople in the city. The groove of songs like "Don't Be Weird About It" and "Bad Boy Worse Drugs" is even stronger live than on record. Baabes' set was one of the most fun ones I've seen in a while, particularly from an opening band. They have quickly gone from my "would like to see" list to "need to see whenever possible" list. I seriously have no idea how they aren't huge after seeing their live show.

Opening the show was Teardrops, a band I was unfamiliar with before Saturday night. Being much more familiar with The Sheila Divine, I was surprised just how heavy Teardrops are. The Boston band land more in the hardcore side of punk, and absolutely slayed their short opening set. This is a band I'm hoping to hear and see more of in the future.
