meg elsier - "sportscar [scrapped]"

meg elsier's spittake was a highlight of 2024, and now the up and coming indie rocker has announced a deluxe reissue is on the way and has released a new single from that album. "sportscar [scrapped]" fits right into the indie rock meets pop genre that has been all the rage for the last five or so years, and is a sound we can't seem to get enough of. This is the type of song that will instantly grab you and make you require multiple listens. It's a quiet and personal song despite also being kind of anthemic. If you loved spittake, "sportscar [scrapped]" stands up with anything from that album. This is going to work perfectly for anyone into artists like Blondshell (who meg elsier has toured with) or Lucy Dacus. This is a bandwagon you're going to want to jump right on.

meg elsier says of her new single:

"'sportscar' is a really interesting addition to the deluxe, specifically because 'spittake' almost had a completely different identity. There was a time when I was playing with the idea of naming the album Check Engine Light On. The influence of cars and how they move you through life is something I didn’t realize was so important to ‘spittake’ until after I’d written it."

"I was really identifying with my beat-up car my mother gave me. It was this thing handed to me that I treated like shit… But that kinda was my life at the time. Something that was shiny and fast, a veneer; but if you checked under the hood, it was burning out. The oil was dark, and the engine was smoking. I would dye my hair (new paint job), get dolled up (took her to the car wash), and perform so well socially when I went out (that V8 engine purring, baby), but that was all it was. I had a coming-to moment like, ‘This isn’t sustainable and I’m about to crash out.'"
