Asbury Park's Yawn Mower have a new alt-rock single out that hits a perfect nostalgia button for me. "Geothermal Springs" has that classic mid-90's alt-rock sound, just as grunge was starting to fade from the mainstream and power pop was edging in. It's filled with catchy harmonies and crunchy guitars, along with lyrics that aren't jokey but definitely have a sense of humor. It's reminding me a lot of vintage Weezer and Fountains of Wayne, which is kind of the basis for my entire taste in music. It's not a pure 90's throwback, however. Yawn Mower let plenty of modern indie rock sensibilities through to make the song sound current, but this is a perfect modern version of a classic alt-rock sound.
Mike Chick says of his band's latest single:
“Biff’s girlfriend went to Iceland a few years ago on a photography trip. When we were talking about it, I came up with the line, ‘Wish that I was with you for the foss’, kind of like a postcard you would get in the mail. (Foss means waterfall in Icelandic). The rest of the song is pretty salt of the Earth, actually talking about ordering chinese food, taking your little sister to the arcade and mall, and gardening. All the things I was doing the day I was working on the lyrics. Except the hot air balloon part. I didn’t ride a balloon that day (or ever).”
You can watch the video for "Geothermal Springs" below. I Just Can't Wait to Die is due out August 15 on Mint 400 Records, and is available for pre-order through Bandcamp.
