The latest from Sweden's Girl Scout starts off as your pretty standard indie pop/rock song that is all the rage now. "Monster" is a little folky, and could have just been a great alt-pop kind of song. And then the guitars and drums come charging in and it turns into the best alt-rock song from 1995 released in 2023. It's a perfectly done loud/quiet/loud kind of song, but with the pop hooks of bands like Letters to Cleo, Weezer, and Veruca Salt. This is a very sweet spot for me personally, so I'm all in for this one. It's a catchy chorus, pounding drums, and fuzzed out guitars. I have no idea how Swedish rockers of today so perfectly captured my college years, but well done!
Singer Emma says of her band's new song:
"Monster is about leaning into your unsympathetic side; being well aware that you’re the bad guy in the dynamic but you’re in too deep so you might as well just go for it. As destructive as it is, I think most people have that side to them, at least I hope they do!"
You can watch the video for "Monster" below. It will be included on an upcoming EP due out in the fall. For more on Girl Scout, check out the band's website.
