I know 2024 is going to be an okay year now that it's confirmed that Abigail Lapell has a new album coming out. Due on May 10 via Outside Music, the album shows a few songs in collaboration with a favorite of mine, Great Lake Swimmers, and produced by Tony Dekker of Great Lake Swimmers.
She sent us a preview of the album along with lead single and album opener, "Anniversary Song," and it's a treat. The song, an unexpectedly full and rich affair that was recorded in an old church live with a full band, is basically your perfect musical appetizer for a lovely Valentine's Day, with the sort of sneaky lyricism to go with some attention-getting instrumentation - the influence of Dekker is apparent in the production, but shouldn't take away from some stealthy guitar work from Lapell that sounds both restrained and complementary in a way I didn't realize I needed today.
Anniversary, Abigail Lapell's fifth album, comes out on May 10. You can get it at her Bandcamp linked above, and the video for "Anniversary Song" is below. She is also touring Canada in April and will have dates in New England throughout the end of May and Early June. More information at her website.
