Los Angeles experimental pop auteur Angélica Garcia has released a new cumbia inspired single that is perfect for those of us that typically don't like pop. "Juanita" is definitely a pop song, but Garcia just handles pop differently. It's such a unique and more organic take on the genre, which is only helped by the cumbia influence. It's the type of song that will immediately grab you. If "Juanita" reminds me of anything else, it would be when Tori Amos experimented more with pop in the late 90's/early 00's. Except, Garcia's style is completely different.
says of her new single:
“Many cumbias have lyrics about pain and longing... My intention was for the tension and confusion in the song to feel like remembering a past life. I wanted to capture what the shadow side of grief does to us.”
