EMEL is a New York City based Tunisian-American art pop musician. Her latest single, "Lose My Mind," features Iraqi-Swedish rapper Nayomi in a wonderfully diverse sound. The song blends an Arabic reggaeton drumbeat with modern alt-pop. It's a mesmerizing combination, and has that laid back but dance friendly sound. Long term readers will know that I typically turn away from modern pop music, particularly when it's pure pop. Still, "Lose My Mind" is a fantastic and inventive song. What I typically don't like about modern pop music is how repetitive is, and the sameness of the genre for at least twenty to twenty-five years. EMEL's latest is pure pop, but it doesn't sound anything like what you typically hear in the genre.
EMEL says of her music:
“I don't create things to be consumed. I hope it transcends time, transcends boundaries, transcends cultures. Music can change the world.”
You can watch the video for "Lose My Mind" below. MRA is due out April 19 on Little Human. For more on EMEL, check out the artist on Instagram and Facebook.
