I'm going to find it impossible not to compare the latest single from Devon Ross to Sonic Youth. First of all, "Mine Not Yours" is being released on Thurston Moore's Daydream Library Series. Second, Ross' delivery is reminiscent of Kim Gordon's speak-singing, particularly in the Goo and Dirty era. And that guitar sound is very Sonic Youth-esque.
That's not to say that Devon Ross is just an early 90's Geffen era Sonic Youth throwback. "Mine Not Yours" is a more modern take on the sound. It has a distinctly Gen-Z feel to a classic Gen-X style, which includes there being a much stronger sense of pop hooks to Ross' music. There's also this intensity lurking just beneath the song, despite how mid-tempo and laid back it sounds. "Mine Not Yours" is the kind of song we love here at If It's Too Loud..., and we'll be keeping an eye on Devon Ross for hopefully a long, long time.
You can listen to "Mine Not Yours" below. Oxford Gardens is out today on Daydream Library Series, and is available here. For more on Devon Ross, check out the artist on Instagram. Upcoming live shows are below the song.
